It’s my seventh day at Curiosity Advertising for my agency internship, and they’re already letting me, an intern, speak on behalf of the agency publicly on the Internet. And you know what they say; everything you hear on the Internet is true.
Soon, I will no longer be able to count on both hands the number of times I’ve walked into this office. I’ve been working for Curiosity a little more than a week and I already feel like I’ve been a part of this team for months. I get excited when I see a client’s billboard, because I already feel that I’ve played a part in that piece of work. In less than two weeks, Curiosity has given me the opportunity to do what I’ve always wanted to do: I want to be able to point to my work in the real world and say, “I had a hand in how this came to be.”
I feel a little sly joy working on tweets for July that the public won’t see for another month. My lofty, overarching goal during my tenure in advertising is to make people change how they think about something or what they do. Someday, I hope to recognize that as affecting large-scale positive change in society, but for now I am just as happy if a newsletter I’ve worked on makes someone give our client a call to inquire about their services.
When asked what I wanted to get out of this internship in my interview with the agency, I responded that I want to be involved with multiple teams and departments so that I can gain an understanding and appreciation for everything that goes on in an advertising agency. I want to work on projects that will actually be useful to the team I’m on and will contribute to the overall effort we are making for our clients. After my first week, my internship at Curiosity has already helped me accomplish just that.
The advertising industry is incredibly special, and Curiosity is an equally incredible place. Being surrounded by people who are passionate and proud of the work they do is rewarding, and actually being included as a real member of the team has been so fulfilling. I’ve found myself forgetting that I have another year of school left, but I think that speaks volumes about the culture here. I’m amazed by what I’ve learned in one week, and I’m beyond excited with what’s in store for me in the next nine.
